沼氣作為一種新興能源其應用越來越廣泛，在我國環保標準中嚴格規定，利用沼氣能源時，沼氣氣體中H2S 含量不得超過20mg/m3 。無論在工業或民用氣體中，都需要盡可能的除去H2S。沼氣作為能源利用已有很長的歷史。沼氣中的硫主要以H2S的形式存在，也可能含有少量的硫醇等其他硫化物。H2S的濃度受發酵原料和發酵工藝的影響很大，蛋白質或硫酸鹽含量高的原料，發酵沼氣中硫化氫的含量較高。由于H2S腐蝕性強，通常在凈化步驟的早期進行去除。沼氣可用于農戶炊事、照明等生活用能，也可用于農副產品的生產、加工，如沼氣養蠶、沼氣孵化、沼氣育雛、沼氣育秧、誘蛾養蠶、沼氣儲糧、沼氣保鮮、沼氣炒茶、蛋雞增光、大棚種植、農產品干燥和烤瓷工藝品等。
